Highlights

Hong-Kong

For Hong-Kong, we’ve expanded our coverage related to maritime data with the addition of Vessel Arrivals Statistics from the Hong-Kong Maritime Department. Data is available on a monthly basis.

In the chart below, we looked at the international arrivals (i.e. by Ocean) of cargo vessels, in absolute number and tonnage. Data on the first page is represented as a 12 month rolling sum.

The current drop in vessels arrivals and tonnage is mainly due to the current congestion situation in the port, resulting in cargos staying at anchor and waiting for their turn to enter.

Australia

For Australia, we’ve been adding monthly business turnover indices, published by the ABS(Australian Bureau of Statistics).

The first chart below is comparing the different business sectors since January 2020. Series represented in green are the sectors that have recovered from the pre-pandemic levels, while the ones in red are still under. To identify these sectors, you can refer to the legend text: series with a red dot are the ones represented with a red line.

As of today, the sector that has been the hit the most is the ‘Accommodation & Food services’.

We decided to take a deep dive there, by comparing these variables with a range of HFI indicators (Google Mobility and OpenTable data). The correlation is very high and suggests a rebound for that sector in the coming month.

Saudi Arabia

For Saudi Arabia, we’ve expanded our range of indicators covering the financial industry, with the addition of consolidated balance sheet for the government specialized credit institutions.

The chart below highlights the assets composition, with a large share of loans, and a shift from Other Assets to Domestic Investments since 2012.
