Your Overview of Data Additions

Major expansion of emerging markets coverage, and IMF CPIS, LME COT Report and ECBC databases added.

Emerging Markets

In the last two weeks, we have substantially expanded our detailed coverage of emerging markets data. The latest additions were focused on banking and credit, government and public finance, foreign finance and national accounts data. The data was added for a broad range of countries, including, but not limited to Thailand, Panama, Kenya, Georgia, Mauritius, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, which is shown in the chart below. You’ll find links to access the data for each country in the list at the end of this post.

IMF CPIS Database

CPIS, which stands for Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey, is a database from the IMF covering economies’ holdings of portfolio investment securities. CPIS data is compiled from the following separate datasets, per country:

  • Equity and investment fund shares
  • Long-term debt instruments
  • Short term debt instruments

Below you have an example of data showing the distribution of China ’s investment across various countries.

CPIS data can be accessed directly via the IMF database in the application, or via the link provided at the end of the post.

LME – Commitments of Traders (COT) Report

Below we have an example of data from the London Metals Exchange COT report, showing the positions of different institutional investors in the aluminum market. The report provides an understanding of the predominant business activity of the LME members and their clients. It represents the daily open positions statistics that are reported, based on the futures positions on LME traded contracts and Delta equivalent traded option positions.

ECBC Bond Market Statistics

The European Covered Bond Council is an organization that represents over 95% of the covered bond issuers around the world. Their Statistics and Data Working Group collects and publishes statistics for all covered bond jurisdictions. Statistics are compiled from the issuer level by experts in each country to ensure accuracy and comprehensive coverage. The bar chart below is a comparison of outstanding market debt and new issuances, in 2016, as well as the change since 2007.
