Chile, Colombia & Mexico We’ve expanded our coverage for the Itau Surprise Index, adding the index for Chile, Colombia and Mexico. These indicators are calculated by Itau BBA and measure the ‘surprise’ of new economic indicators being released compared to the expectations from analysts.
In the chart below, we can see that the latest economic figures for Chile were perceived as negative surprise by the markets, contrary to Mexico and Colombia, which outperformed market expectations.
Saudi Arabia For Saudi Arabia, we’ve increased our real estate data granularity with the addition of +400 series covering the various municipalities and neighbourhoods around the three main cities: Dammam, Riyadh and Jeddah. The variables measure the average price per square meter for residential and commercial real estate.
In the chart below, we created diffusion indices for the three cities to capture the trends in real estate prices. To do so, we counted the number of municipalities having a year-on-year price increase and expressed it as a percentage of the total number of municipalities per city.
After a slowdown from 2010 to 2017, the real estate market has had strong momentum since 2018 barring one quarter in 2020 when the pandemic temporarily slowed activity.

The chart below displays the top 30 cities for 2021 and the evolution of their rankings since 2016. Abu Dhabi and Dublin are the two cities showing the strongest progression in the rankings. The strongest decline comes from the United States: New York City and San Francisco, which were ranked #1 and #2 in 2016 are now respectively ranked 18 and 25.
